The Orkney Islands in Scotland’s North Atlantic are rich in folklore. According to legends, ghosts stalk ruined churchyards and underground dwellers protect ancient burial mounds.
On the Island of Stennes the enormous stone circle, the Bronze Age Ring of Brodgar is perhaps the most famous Orcadian attraction. At 340 feet (103.6 meters) in diameter, it is the third largest ring of stones in the British Isles. Interestingly, it is precisely the same size as the two inner rings of Avebury.
Legend tells that, one dark night long ago, a group of fearsome giants trekked to the Ness between two lochs. One took up his old fiddle and began to play a reel. The giants danced all night, and were so enthralled that they failed to notice the sun was rising over the eastern horizon. When the golden rays of light touched the dancing giants, they were transformed into the circle of towering stones that now attract visitors from around the world.
The Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae, the Stones of Stennes and Maeshowe Chambered Cairn together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.
