It represents the oldest known example in the Americas of a monument dedicated to observing solar movement and measuring time. The Chankillo Solar Observatory and the related monuments at the site make use of a combination of artificial and natural horizon markers to define calendar dates. Very few sites in the world possess these features, and Chankillo is one of only two known ancient sites that incorporate a complete solar horizon calendar, using its markers to track the progressive movement of the sun along the horizon throughout the solar year. These elements still exist and remain functional today. The area designated as the “Chankillo Solar Observatory and its Ceremonial Center” includes all the components necessary to preserve Then we visit the Sechin Ceremonial Center located in the valley of the Casma River, on the central coast of Peru.
