About Your Home in Tanzania, Pumziko Safari & Wellness Lodge

Pumziko- Iraqw HousePumziko Safari & Wellness Lodge – Set deep into the jungle, getting to this small, ecolodge is a real safari experience. Pumziko is Swahili for a place that relaxes you. There are no electrical services in any rooms, which are lit by lanterns before dark. The fireplaces are started by Masai helpers in the evenings. They use a generator for charging electrical devices in the main lodge area during daytime only. Because of animal activity, guests are not allowed to leave their rooms by themselves in the evenings, but will be assisted by a Masai escort, one of whom is available for each guest during the evenings and all night long in case of emergencies.

The kitchen is open aired, facing inside the main lodge, so guests can enjoy the aromas of traditional African cooking. Wifi and charging of electrical devices are available in the main lodge only. The observation deck over the jungle floor is a special treat for animal viewing and amazing views, with hammocks

Guest houses are designed for supreme relaxation and provide incredible views – even from the large, plush beds. Guest rooms feature extra large baths, outside elephant showers, indoor bamboo tree showers, all natural spa products, custom African furniture and art, large private decks with stunning views and a sitting area with a porch jungle swing!

elephantsLocal wildlife includes elephants, hyenas, lions, dik dik and leopards. They’ve pretty much had them all except for giraffes. It’s always exciting to see who will show up at night. Lions, elephants and hyenas are frequent guests depending on the time of year, but they can usually count on Simba or hyenas showing up most nights.  Birdbaths at each room and the main lodge make for outstanding bird viewing.

Optional Post-Retreat 4-Day Serengeti Safari

Day One – Pumziko to Serengeti (B,L,D)
deluxe africa safariEarly this morning after breakfast we will depart for the Serengeti to our Private Hemingway style safari camp. The camp is a mobile deluxe camp with in-suite private bathrooms and showers, comfy beds, and with a perfect proximity for experiencing the “Great Migration.” The Serengeti harbors a vast number of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra – estimated up to 1.5 million – attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena. It’s a spectacle unlike anything seen anywhere else in the world. Today we’ll have an afternoon game drive with a picnic lunch. Enjoy a deluxe three-course bush dinner this evening under the African stars, with evening cocktails around the campfire to reminiscence about today’s safaris. (Lunches and dinners are four-course meals cooked in a bush style kitchen by our personal bush chef; it’s an incredible experience.)

Day Two – Serengeti (B,L,D)
Today we enjoy a full day of some of the most exciting games drives in all of Africa as we track the Great Migration. After lunch at camp we have time for an afternoon nap or relaxing before our late afternoon game drive. This evening relax with cocktails and gather again around the campfire to discuss the exciting wildlife seen today.

Day Three – Ngorongoro Crater (B,L)
deluxe safari tentEarly this morning we leave the beautiful Serengeti and head for the one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Africa, the famous Ngorongoro Crater. We’ll spend the entire day exploring the crater with a picnic lunch by the hippo lake. Late this afternoon we overnight at the deluxe safari lodge, Karatu.
Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact caldera in the world, and it shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens anywhere. A permanent population of more than 30,000 animals inhabit a mere 100 square miles in the 2,000 ft deep crater, making it one of the few places in Africa where guests have a great chance of seeing the entire Big Five (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, and Rhinoceros) in the course of a single game drive, and one of the last remaining places in Tanzania where you can still see the endangered Black Rhino.
