\"Nazca<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of Earth\u2019s most curious mysteries are etched in the ground near Nazca, Peru. For example, the 72-foot-long (22 meters) “killer whale holding a knife\u201d seen above. There are at least 300 more, including a hummingbird, fish, monkey, stylized plants, several spiders, a spiral and other geometric shapes.<\/p>\n

Archaeologists have determined that these ancient artworks were likely dug into the earth between 200 B.C. to A.D. 500 by members of a pre-Incan civilization known as the Nazca (or Nasca).<\/p>\n

Why would a \u201cprimitive\u201d society construct patterns that can only be seen from the air 2,000 years before airplanes were invented?<\/p>\n

When you consider that several of the features closely resemble landing strips, it\u2019s not surprising that many people have speculated UFOs are involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cAncient Aliens\u201d expert Erich von Daniken lists 19 possible explanations, including ceremonial activities, copies of visions, pens for animals and tribal signs.<\/p>\n

A scientist who devoted much of her life to studying the Nazca lines was Maria Reiche. Before her death in 1998, Dr. Reiche expressed the opinion that they involved spirits or shamans.<\/p>\n

UNESCO declared the geoglyphs a World Heritage Site in 1994, declaring them \u201camong archaeology’s greatest enigmas because of their quantity, nature, size and continuity.”<\/p>\n
