Southwest USA 4-Day Exploration
1st Day, Friday, to Chinle
Arrival in Chinle where this evening we will have a get together to go over the program, followed by dinner at our hotel.
2nd Day, Saturday, Hubbell Trading Post & Canyon de Chelly
This morning we drive to Grado to visit Hubell Trading Post National Monument. Don Lorenzo Hubbell came to Granada to open the trading post shortly after the Navajo’s were released from confinement in New Mexico. He elevated their weaving into an art form. After lunch on our own, we board 4 x 4 vehicles for the journey into the Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-Shay). With our Navajo guide, we will see pictures and petroglyphs from the ancient ones, the Anazai and their ruins. We will view impressive Native American ruins and Spider Rock, a towering stone needle rising arrow-straight from the canyon floor. We return through some of the most scenic countryside in the Southwest to our hotel for dinner.
3rd Day, Sunday, Hopi Reservation & Canyon del Muerto
Less known and less visited, but equally fascinating, is Canyon de Chellys’ side arm, the Canyon del Muerto (Canyon of Death) so named when Col. Kit Carson’s troopers devastated the Navajos at Massacres Cave in 1864. After lunch on our own, we will enter the Hopi Reservation where they have lived on their Mesas for more than 1,000 years and continue their traditional ceremonies and lifestyles to the present day. The Hopi Cultural Center and our guide will provide us with insights onto the life at Hopi. Return to our hotel for dinner.
4th Day, Monday
After breakfast, our tour ends, or continue to an Optional 3 day/ 2 night tour of the Grand Canyon.
