\"Kukulkan<\/a>Although the Spanish invaders called it El Castillo (The Castle), the Maya, who built the pyramid some time between the 8th and 12th centuries (900 to 1300 years ago) named it the Temple of Kukulcan after their feathered serpent deity.<\/p>\n

Every spring and fall, visitors from around the world travel to Chichen Itza to watch the shadow of the serpent god Kukulcan travel up and down the pyramid. This dramatic effect happens because those amazing Maya constructed their pyramid to be precisely aligned with the angle of the sun during the time of the Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes.<\/p>\n

The Feathered Serpent deity was also part of Aztec spirituality. They named it Quetzacoatl. The being is considered to be an allegory that represents dualism – as its wings allow it to fly in the sky, while, being a snake, it also travels along the ground among the other animals of the Earth.<\/p>\n
