\"Temple<\/a>When the Great Pyramid of Giza was new and shiny, and Stonehenge was freshly built, there were sacred structures that had been constructed more than 1,000 years earlier. I\u2019m talking about the temples on the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta. And they\u2019re still standing today.<\/p>\n

Malta is rich with myths and legends. You\u2019re probably familiar with the 1941 Humphry Bogart movie, \u201cThe Maltese Falcon,\u201d about the precious black bird, encrusted from beak to claw with the rarest jewels, that was created in 1539 as a tribute paid to King Charles V of Spain by the Knights Templar of Malta.<\/p>\n

The falcon story may be fiction, but the Maltese Knights Templar were real. In the early 1300s, the King of Sicily gave the island to the Christian military organization as a reward for their services during the Crusades. The Templars built fortifications and created a new city.<\/p>\n

\"Valletta,<\/a>
\nValletta is the smallest capital city in Europe in size, but it\u2019s packed with history. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, and in 2024 Travel & Leisure magazine listed it as one of the Best Places in the World to Visit.<\/p>\n
