He was well schooled at several monasteries, became a monk, and later ordained as a priest. Colm, in Latin, is Columba. Cille means \u201cof the churches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a wealthy cousin gave him some land, he was able to travel throughout the north of Ireland teaching pagans about Christianity. Within 10 years he founded 30 monasteries.<\/p>\n<p>Colmcille \u2013 aka Columba \u2013 was described as \u201ca striking figure of great stature and powerful build, with a loud, melodious voice which could be heard from one hilltop to another.\u201d Skilled at penmanship, he copied hundreds of religious books, one of which got him into trouble.<\/p>\n<p>In 560, while being tutored by Finnian of Movilla, he copied a book of psalms, intending to keep it, but Finnian wanted the copy, and the dispute \u2013 known as the battle of C\u00fal Dreimhne (the Battle of the Book) \u2013 resulted in several deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Three years later, Columba gathered a dozen companions and set sail for Scotland, to spread the gospel to the pagan Picts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1378\" src=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/columba-postage-stamp.jpg\" alt=\"St Columba on UK postage stamp\" width=\"414\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/columba-postage-stamp.jpg 414w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/columba-postage-stamp-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Roman writers described the Picts (the name means \u201cpainted people\u201d) as fearsome, barbarous savages. The Romans built Hadrian\u2019s Wall to protect England from the warriors in the north.<\/p>\n<p>Columba\u2019s boat landed on Iona in 563, and that was where he built Scotland&#8217;s first church and established a monastic community.<\/p>\n<p>Many stories are told of the miracles Columba performed while converting the Picts to Christianity, including what might be the first recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster.<\/p>\n<p>On August 22, 656, when Columba was traveling across Scotland, he was crossing the River Ness when a ferocious water beast killed a Pict and tried to attack his disciple, Lugne. Columba raised his hand, made the sign of the cross, and shouted, \u201cYou will go no further, and won\u2019t touch the man. Go back at once.\u201d The monster fled, \u201cmore quickly than if it has been pulled with ropes,\u201d and the local Picts were so amazed they converted to Christianity on the spot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1379\" src=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Book_of_Kells.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration from Book of Kells\" width=\"640\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Book_of_Kells.jpg 970w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Book_of_Kells-300x170.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Book_of_Kells-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Besides founding numerous churches and monasteries, Columba is credited with transcribing 300 books and writing at least two poems.<\/p>\n<p>The original wooden buildings on Iona were replaced by a stone chapel in about 800, but raids by Vikings in 802, 806, and 825 sent the monks back to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that the grand illuminated manuscript The Book of Kells, was started on Iona, but taken unfinished to the Abbey of Kells, about 40 miles north of Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>A Benedictine Monastery and an Augustinian Nunnery were established on the foundations of Columba\u2019s original monastery in the early 1200s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1380\" src=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iona-abbey.jpg\" alt=\"Iona Abbey\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iona-abbey.jpg 1080w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iona-abbey-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iona-abbey-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/bodymindspiritjourneys.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iona-abbey-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Abbey on Iona has been restored several times, following the Scottish reformation in the 15th century. But on its grounds may still be seen the graves of 48 kings of Scotland, including Mac Bethad Findl\u00e1ich, Duncan and Donald Bane.
