In 1799, when Napoleon was in Egypt fighting the Ottomans, his army took shelter in a dilapidated fort in Rashid on the west bank of the Nile. When one of Napoleon’s aides, Lieutenant Pierre-Fran\u00e7ois Bouchard, was inspecting the defensive walls, he made a discovery that changed history. One of the stones had lettering carved into it. The words were written in Greek, but there were also symbols \u2013 Egyptian hieroglyphics.<\/p>\n

\"Rosetta<\/p>\n

This was the Rosetta Stone, with the same text written in Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian. It was the key to unlocking the mysteries of Egyptian picture-writing, allowing the modern world to finally understand the language of the Pharaohs.<\/p>\n

About 130 years later came the second most important breakthrough in our understanding of Ancient Egypt. In 1937, R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz began a painstaking study of the grand temple complex of Luxor. It took 15 years, but after precisely analyzing every stone, statue and inscription in every chamber, Schwaller de Lubicz demonstrated how profoundly advanced the civilization of Ancient Egypt really was, both materially and spiritually. He showed that the foundation of our modern science and culture came not from Greece, but from Egypt.<\/p>\n
